Story Behind The Song
The lyrics for this song came to me while I was reading and pondering over the story of Zacchaeus the Tax collector (the publican). Many were converted that day in Jericho as Jesus was passing through to Bethany to raise Lazarus however, their story was not recorded in the Bible, and yet the conversion of Zacchaeus was captured. There should be something extraordinary about his case that should make the Apostle Luke to capture his account in these verses of Luke 19. First of, you have to take note that Zacchaeus lived in the same city that the Patriarch Joshua placed under a curse and yet Christ honored it with His presence for the gospel to take away that curse. Second Zacchaeus was a chief publican, according to Jewish custom at the time, publicans were considered sinners, so in effect Zacchaeus was a chief sinner. Also, Jesus had not long preached a sermon about how difficult is was for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God than a camel through the eye of the needle. That said, this is a man many would have considered undeserving of God’s grace and salvation, a chief sinner, a rich man and from a city that is cursed. However God’s word in Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” To sum up this marvelous redemption story, when Jesus called out to Zacchaeus, the bible said he immediately came down with such joy and was even exceedingly over joyed when Jesus told him, today, I will be in your house for dinner. The story of a chief sinner was forever changed, grace has come to visit him, salvation has come, and not only was he changed, his entire household was also saved.
:: How Could I Say No Lyrics by Jesse Crosby Mantey ::
(Luke 19:1-10, Romans 5:8)

Verse 1
I heard the master’s voice
calling out my name
Reaching out from heaven to me here on earth – (2x)

He said if only you
will call upon me
I will come in and dine with you on this day
You picked me up from long dusty road
You shook away ma shame, ma pain and ma tears

How could I say no, when you first love me
How could I say no, when you reached out for me
How could I say no, when you first called out
How could I say no, when you showed me grace

Verse 2
Lord, I’m giving up my ways
and I surrender all
Reaching out you changed
the path I was on
You raised me up to seat high with you
In heavenly places in honor and grace

Repeat Chorus

When you showed me grace -6x

How could I say no, when you first love me
How could I say no, when you showed me grace

When you showed me grace
When you showed me grace – 2x

We hu mobro do so
We hu mobro do so
